Vetting a Merchant Cash Advance Provider

Friday, July 31st, 2009

One thing to understand about the business of providing a merchant cash advance is that this is not as regulated as lending is. When you take out a merchant cash advance, you are technically selling a portion the future income from your business. As such, this is considered a business-to-business transaction, which is exempt from regulation by laws such as the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, Electronic Funds Transfer Act, and the Truth in Lending Act.

That being said, the merchant cash advance is a niche that is able to provide businesses with capital that otherwise may be difficult or impossible to obtain. But since it is still a fairly unregulated industry, you must take steps on your own to avoid predatory practices. The North American Merchant Advance Association (NAMA) has been formed by a consortium of merchant advance providers as a self-regulatory organization (SRO), like the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority is an SRO. Before doing business with a merchant cash advance provider, check with NAMA to see if they are a member, or if NAMA is aware of any complaints about them. You may also want to check with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission to see if there have been any complaints or cases brought against the provider.

Before you accept the terms of any agreement with a merchant cash advance provider, be sure to read and understand the terms of the contract. If you accept a contract with unfavorable terms, you will have very little recourse. Most often you will fill out an application with a broker that will work to find a provider with the best terms for your business. This application, or even an application directly with a merchant cash advance provider, is no substitute for your contract; get a copy of your merchant cash advance contract before you agree to anything. Armed with this information, you will be best able to determine for yourself the fairness of any deal you enter into.

Merchant Cash Advance versus Unsecured Business Loans

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

An advantage to unsecured business loans over conventional loans is that there is no collateral required to back them up. These unsecured loans can be made on the basis of the credit worthiness of the borrower, and are sometimes referred to as signature loans. However, unless you are on good terms with a private lender, or your business has an outstanding credit rating, it is unlikely that you will be approved for a very high loan amount — if at all. If your business’s credit is not well established, but you yourself do, it is possible that you may be able to obtain unsecured business loans with a personal guarantee. However, this exposes you personally, as you become the payer of last resort if your business operations cannot meet the loan obligations.

On the other hand, it is much easier to obtain capital from a merchant cash advance, which does not rely on your credit because it is not a loan. Credit worthiness does not normally play a very big part in the approval process for a merchant cash advance, because it is repaid from the credit card receipts generated on a daily basis by your business. The advance is actually from the discounted purchase of a portion of your credit card receipts, so it does not require you to make fixed monthly payments like a loan does. You should avoid doing business with any merchant cash advance provider that requires you to put up collateral or provide a personal guarantee — this is simply not required for this type of transaction. The approval rate for a merchant cash advance is much higher than that of unsecured business loans, and it is likely that you will be able to get a larger amount of capital by this method, as well.

Google Adwords for Business

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

OK 3 steps to get your Google Adwords setup and ready to start
advertising, creating an account, writing your first ad and
submitting your billing information.

The first thing you need to do is sign up and get yourself a
google adwords account. To do that head over to the Google and
at the bottom of the screen click on the ‘Advertising
Programmes’ link at the bottom.

Then:

• Click into the Adwords homepage

• Click ‘try now’ at the top right of the screen

• Select the standard edition (you need to have an active
website for the standard edition, if you don’t have an active
website you are not really at the stage to start experimenting
with Adwords!)

• On the next screen it will ask you if you have a Google
account, you could have one for gmail, Google Adsense, Google
Analytics etc, all of them will give you a Google account which
you can enter at this step. If you reallyclick the button that
says you don’t have an account and it will ask for some details
to make one for you.

• If you have used an existing Google account you can then sign
in to your brand spanking new Google Adwords account, if you
have created a new account then you need to click the
verification link in the email they don’t have one or want a
fresh account associated with Adwords (it is a lot easier just
to have one account just trust me!) then have just sent you to
confirm you are the owner of that email address, then you can
sign in.

Ok now create a test campaign so you can get going. When you
log in click on the ‘create my first campaign’ button and you
will be taken through the campaign setup process.

Just enter any information in, put in any name, choose any
country, put in a fake ad (just fake not silly as if that makes
it to an editor you’ll be in their bad books!) and choose your
keyword as ‘123456789’ or similar so it will not actually show.

Once you have finished setting up your campaign it will show you
a summary screen where you can check everything is ok – then
click ‘continue to billing’ There you enter your billing
information, select your timezone and agree to the terms and
conditions, if you select direct debit payment you will have to
wait while that goes through the system, but the other options
mean that you can start your campaign right now.

Personally I use a credit card payment at the end of the month
for my Adwords account, but you also have the choice to do
prepay where you deposit money into your account for Adwords to
use, this will reduce any risks on your behalf as if you were to
accidentally leave an ad running that built up a huge bill then
with the credit card option you’d have to pay, if you used
prepay then the ad would just stop running after the money in
your account ran out.

Please remember that there is a 5 - $10 setup charge for your
account that they will charge you after setup.

The choice is yours, but just make sure after you setup your
billing that you go to the ‘campaign summary’ page listed at the
top of the screen and tick the checkbox next to your dummy
campaign and delete it! Otherwise you may get charged for the
advert showing up!

Now is the time to take action and get your Adwords campaign started with our
new home study course on three dvd’s show you how to
set up each stage step by step so you can do well with Google
Adwords.

Drop by our site and get your FREE 7 part course taken from my New e-book.

Small Business Loans Struggling to Get Back on Track

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Provisions for small business loans in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Recovery Act) have just started to trickle cash into the hands of capital-strapped Small Business Administration (SBA) applicants. There are over 360 SBA lenders that have not approved a single loan under the government sponsored program since October, 2008; nearly half of those lenders had not approved an SBA loan for over two years. As a result of the Recovery Act, there are now about 1,200 lenders participating, which is a good sign. However, there is a critical program intended to help small businesses that are struggling, which has yet to get off the ground as of this writing. The America’s Recovery Capital program is geared to businesses that only need amounts up to $36,000 — a modest capital need that might not seem worth bothering with for most business lenders.

If you have a small business that just needs $20,000 to $50,000, and you are having trouble finding lenders or investors, you do not have to wait around for your turn to get a piece of the Recovery Act pie. There is already an option that you can tap into without waiting on bureaucrats and wading through red tape; it is called the merchant cash advance. This alternative to small business loans is available to most established businesses that generate a steady stream of credit card receipts. A merchant cash advance provider will simply purchase a portion of your future credit card receipts at a discount, and provide you a lump sum of ready capital you need to jump-start your business. Unlike small business loans that tie up your credit and may require you to put up collateral, the merchant cash advance requires neither. The amount you can be approved for depends on several factors, including how long you have been in business and your receipts volume.  Once you are approved, you can have ready capital in your hands within a couple of weeks.

An Alternative to Restaurant Loans

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Have you had trouble getting approved for restaurant loans? What if you had an easy way to raise capital for expanding your restaurant business without tying up your credit or putting up any collateral? You can do this easily with what is called a merchant cash advance. Unlike a small business loan, (and all the paperwork that goes with an application for one), the merchant cash advance is not a loan at all.

When you take out a merchant cash advance, you are actually selling a portion of your future credit card receipts to the provider at a discount. In return, you have access to a lump sum of cash that you can use to expand your business. With restaurant loans you have to pay a fixed amount each month, no matter how much, or how little volume your business accrues, and this can make for a big cash squeeze during those slow months. Since the cash advance is paid back with a portion of your credit card receipts, when your business is slower, you also pay less on your advance.

One thing that makes it difficult to get restaurant loans is this lack of liquidity during the slow times. But, despite this, merchant cash advance providers like doing business with restaurants because they know you produce a lot of credit card receipts, which is what they are buying. You may be surprised how easy it is to find a provider that can give you terms that are right for your business.  A broker will be able to take your application information in minutes to help you find the right deal, and upon being approved you can realistically expect to get your cash in a matter of a couple of weeks. You are the best judge of how capital investments in your business will be able to affect your ability to generate receipts. Rather than try to prove this to lenders for restaurant loans, you can easily raise capital to expand your business based on those very receipts.

Business Thank You Cards

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Do you wonder, like I do, if an email thank-you note is an appropriate way to show appreciation in a business context? Well, a growing number of decision makers consider an emailed business thank you note acceptable. But why not take that one step further and get the power of hand written, business thank you cards?

A 2003 survey by the Accountemps organization asked executives this question: “How appropriate is it for job candidates to send an email thank-you message, rather than a written note?” Of those who responded, 26% considered an email response very appropriate, while another 52% considered it somewhat appropriate. On the other hand, 22% considered an email thank-you note either somewhat inappropriate or very inappropriate (you can make some allowance for changing attitudes in the marketing communication field since 2003).

Still, the chairman of Accountemps suggests that job seekers follow up with a personal, hand-written thank-you card. Max Messmer recommends an immediate note sent by email, with the hand-written card to follow up. From personal experience and from what I’ve heard from others, this seems like a good strategy, whether for job seeking, sales, or other encounters.

I say “a good strategy” because business thank-you cards provide additional opportunities to sell yourself. As you likely know, many sales occur after multiple contacts. Those of us who sell would like to think we can get the sale on our first contact, and sometimes we do. But, for many products and services, especially those that have a significant price tag, it can take many contacts before the sale occurs.

That’s reasonable, too, when you think about it. After all, on first contact the prospect likely doesn’t know us or what we represent Only after a series of contacts will the prospect get to the point of trusting us and accepting our solution to his or her problem. Which helps explain why many sales managers emphasize follow-up, follow-up, and follow-up. Persistence pays.

You can expect a recruiter and job seeker to be in similar positions. By sending thank-you cards, though, candidates get a second chance to imprint their name and face on the mind of the recruiter. Sending a second, hand-written card, doubly emphasizes your interest and sincerity. In fact, I’d wager that the arrival of the hand-written note would have an even greater impact on the recruiter.

If you’re looking for a job, keep this in mind: the survey found that only 39% of job seekers followed up with a thank you message of any kind. So, by sending a business thank you card, you put yourself into a distinct class; by sending a second one, and especially if they’re personal and hand written, you’ve really set yourself apart from the rest of the pack.

It’s quick, and it’s easy, to send business thank you cards, but there’s whole lot of potential for getting the business or getting the job.

Offline Marketing

Monday, July 27th, 2009

Offline, Off-line or Off Line, no matter how you spell it the meaning is the same when we talk about marketing offline. Offline Marketing is promoting your business using tools and techniques that are not connected to a computer, though the marketing can be used to promote a business that is on the Internet, the tactics are decidedly old school and happen in the physical world not the virtual world.

Think back to when you built your first business, maybe as a child you had a lemonade stand. Noise combined with huge signs were some of the tactics we used to get noticed and sell products. Whatever crossed our minds as a way to promote out lemonade was a good idea.” There are hundreds of offline marketing tips to choose from, try as many as your budget can afford and find the ones that work best for your business.

It may have never crossed our mind that we were using offline marketing tactics, nor that we might fail to sell all the lemonade our mothers had made for us. We knew our friends would go to the movies on the weekend, we sold things to get the money to join them. Failure was not an option when we we kids, if one car didn’t stop the next one would.

Offline Marketing is all about creating something in the empty space that presents itself to you. Empty space is like a garden, it is just waiting for ideas to be used like seeds and soon it will produce.

Your imagination can see this Marketing Space just like you saw the space as a kid for selling lemonade. You setup the stand and get customers to see it. No more then a few people can drive by without buying something before you make lots of noise.

Filling the space can be as simple as having your little sister shaking pompoms or something more complicated like blocking the road, your buddies could drive bikes around in a circle, forcing the cars to slow down and stop.

While your mother is red faced at your overt tactics of filling the Marketing Space she is also very proud of your ingenuity and drive. Each new thought in offline marketing builds upon opportunity of success.

Empty space is Opportunity. Empty space is all around just waiting for you to plug into it. Empty space is a dream come true not just for the advertising professional but also for the do-it-yourself small business owner. Empty space and offline marketing demand to be together where they can help you generate both online and offline traffic and create a successful business.

Check out the this list of offline marketing tips, it will give you new ideas along with many ideas that have been building offline marketing success for decades.

How to Gain the Trust of a Potential JV Partner with Your Credibility

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

Have you tried unsuccessfully to gain a joint venture partner? Perhaps you have given presentations and proposals to other business owners who genuinely were not interested in a JV. Or perhaps you didn’t highlight your own credibility enough. Sometimes a great business idea for a JV is not enough to convince another entrepreneur or business owner to join up. You must earn their trust as a credible potential partner and rainmaker.

Savvy business owners and entrepreneurs are choosy about with whom they spend their time and build alliances. Association with other successful business owners may give them additional credibility and status. Therefore, it’s not just business success, but also the reputation at stake as well.

Subsequently, with this type of business owner with whom you want to partner on a joint venture, you must earn his trust as a credible business owner yourself. Success breeds success, as they say.  If you are after a savvy business owner who is careful with his associations, here are some things you might use to gain his trust:

Client Testimonials

Use your own customer testimonials. Don’t just tout your own success; let your customers do it for you. Your customers and clients can really help your company shine. Whether you provide the best customer service, or produce and sell the best widget, customer testimonials will be the driving force that tells other customers, and your potential JV partner, that you do quality work. Get as many testimonials as you can. A few are good, but 10 shining testimonials are great.

Press Exposure

What have you done in your business that has been noticed by the press? Keep a clip file of any and all media about your business. Perhaps you were interviewed by the local major newspaper or gave a radio interview. And better yet, you got a stellar review about your business in a newspaper or magazine. Clip those articles and reviews and show them to your potential JV partner. Again, praise about your business ability from others gives you additional and heightened credibility.

Endorsements

Positive press is nice, but endorsements from other reputable businesses in your industry or field of business can give you a lot of credibility. People with high status and reputation that say good things about your work are a boost toward greater success. For instance, if you invented a small product and famous pitchman, Billy Mays, chose it to be in his next infomercial, you and your product just enjoyed a jolt of credibility from his endorsement.

A potential JV partner with a discerning eye and a sense for reputation may be one of the toughest pitches you’ll make for a business arrangement. But if you feel that their status, business acumen, and product are a good fit for a JV with you, then it’s worth the effort.  Be sure to appeal to their sense of reputation and status by highlighting your own.
